Down a quiet street in Claremont, OFFMARKET Gallery is making space for modern, international, and artisan-focused design in its latest exhibition, Mutina Editions.

OFFMARKET Gallery is a private exhibition space and the home of art collector, curator and consultant Olivier David. Since its inaugural exhibition last year, OFFMARKET Gallery has delivered exhibitions that connect and combine Australian art and modern European aesthetics.

For this exhibition David has partnered with MUTINA; an artisanal manufacturer of tiles in Italy who regularly work with acclaimed European designers such as Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, Patricia Urquiola, homeware designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec and Milan-based artist and Memphis Group founding member, Nathalie Du Pasquier.

In 2021 MUTINA launched Mutina Editions, an offshoot of MUTINA, which works with these designers to create limited and open edition artisanal ceramic pieces using traditional Italian methods.

Mutina Editions as it appears in OFFMARKET Gallery offers a world first opportunity outside of Milan for Mutina Editions and its artists to collaborate with Australian companies, including OFFMARKET Gallery and Myaree Ceramics. The result is a multilayered expression of artistic experimentation, materiality, cooperation and storytelling.

David’s expansive home makes for an ideal exhibition space. Designed by renowned local architect Richard Reilly, the house’s post-modern architecture and splashes of colour open a dialogue with the pieces within the exhibition, an effect that David calls “a gallery within a gallery.”

Throughout his home, David has tastefully arranged a combination of prints, paintings ceramics, homewares and furniture such that to interact with each artwork becomes a highly personal and domestic experience.

The highlight of Mutina Editions is the oeuvre of master artiste Du Pasquier, who’s interplay with form and colour is as joyful as it is skilful. Between giclée, screen-printing and ceramics, her works demonstrate decades of simple and elegant design.

This interplay is demonstrated in three of Du Pasquier’s works that are exhibited close to one another in Mutina Editions. The screen-print Luminosa 03, 2008, ceramic work Paesaggi – Rettangolo Policromo, 2022and giclée print Mattonelle Margherita Point Plinth take cues from each other, working together to create a visual narrative in carrying their vivid colours and geometric shapes across time and medium.

Another exciting feature of Mutina Editions is a series of giclée prints that Du Pasquier designed for David especially for OFFMARKET Gallery, inspired by Australian landscapes and culture. Of the series, Du Pasquier said;

“They are the first prints I’ve made especially for Olivier, and I wanted them to reflect my idea of Australia — optimistic, bright, and somehow connected to beach culture.”

Mutina Editions at OFFMARKET Gallery is an earnest love letter to modern European aesthetics and celebration of intercontinental collaboration. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at OFFMARKET Gallery, the meticulous arrangement of the artworks and David’s warm hospitality make this gallery high on my list for a revisit.

Though OFFMARKET accepts visitors by appointment only, its website easily offers the opportunity to book a viewing either during one of its open days, or at a time that suits you.

Mutina Editions is on display at OFFMARKET Gallery until 29 November.
